Anything mentionable is manageable

A friend of mine encouraged me to watch “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” Although I expected to learn more about Mr. Rogers, I still enjoyed it. The particular phrase from the movie that I’d like to explore further is “anything mentionable is manageable.”

I used to work in project management. One of my favorite phrases I picked up from working on big projects was “that which can be measured, can be managed.” I got this when it came to problems with labor productivity, equipment delivery, or even bad weather. However, when it came to my emotions, not so much.

Please check out my new book “The Love Driven Man”

As a Control Driven Man, I didn’t have the language necessary to articulate what was weighing down my heart. Consequently, I never addressed the root cause of my pain. The Love Driven Man doesn’t have all the solutions, but he knows healing starts with stepping into the discomfort.

What’s the best place to start? Start journaling. It doesn’t have to be anything big or fancy. Set aside five minutes per day to write down how you felt in the last 24 hours and what you think caused this behavior. That’s it. Very simple, but it’s a game-changer for my clients.

Remember, anything mentionable is manageable, and the best time to start is now.

What helps you articulate what’s on your heart? How effective is it?
