Lead with the heart

As I scrolled down Linkedin, I found an article about the two criteria people use to judge you when they first meet you. They are:

Can I trust this person?

Can I respect this person?

Which one do you think is more important?

It’s can I trust this person!

Why is that? My best guess is that we know that our minds are limited. We will need people who know the things that we don’t. But knowledge is power, so we want to make sure that the person wielding the necessary abilities will use it for our good. Somebody we can trust!

The article makes it even more primal by mentioning how in cavemen days it was more important to figure out if your fellow man was going to kill you and steal all your possessions than if he was competent enough to build a good fire.

It goes even deeper than that though. In Proverbs 4:23 it says,

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

We innately understand that no matter how capable or smart the person is, if their heart doesn’t have the right intentions, it will eventually harm us. That’s why the best way to lead, is to lead with the heart.

So what does it mean for me? It means expressing genuine care for others. It’s hard. I tend to fall short when I am on tight deadlines. In those cases, I want to ask myself: Is my deadline worth compromising a relationship with this person?

For if I end up putting my needs in front of others, fear will infect my heart. Fear that God will NOT provide the necessary graces. An anxiety that I have to start controlling the uncontrollable.

I do that long enough, I will lose trust!

Which people do you consider most trustworthy? What is it precisely that they do that made you think about them?
