At my last Fire Team meeting one of the members identified fear of significance as an obstacle to taking action. This is an interesting one, because how do I reconcile the fear of significance with “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35
I think it all comes down to definitions. Significance on earth is totally different than significance in the spiritual realm. Just like significance in our mind is totally different than significance in our heart. Or to put it even more plainly, significance as defined by man and significance as defined by God rarely overlaps.
Leadership is hard, because it requires a lot of failing. To make matters even more complicated, failure by manly standards is typically a success by Godly standards. I mean think of the Apostles. All, except for one were martyrs. Total failure by the standards of the day, but yet today we all admire them for their courage.
Spiritual Leadership, therefore, is extra hard. It takes even more failures than Earthly Leadership and what you sow might not even start growing till long after you’re gone.
That’s why it’s so important to be surrounded by encouraging people. People who will walk with you when it feels like you are walking through the “through the valley of the shadow of death” and you want to stop for the fear of significance.
So you don’t turn around to go back to insignificance in Egypt. Instead, in a Fire Team formation, continue marching towards the promised land.
Who helps you to get over the fear of significance? How can you bring more people like that into your life?
Don’t know how to get started? As a man, you are very good at solving problems with your mind. However, when your romantic relationships suffer or you don’t feel fulfilled at work … you can’t solve these types of problems by logic alone. That’s because your locked up heart is sabotaging you!
